April A to Z Challenge – S is for Shadwell, or is that Ladd?

I've written about my fourth great grandmother, Harriet Shadwell, and her husband and children before in my post A Staggered Emigration – The Bull Family. Today, I'll share some of her ancestry.
  1. Harriet Shadwell was christened on 16 March 1834 in Melksham, Wiltshire. She married Walter Bull, son of James Bull and Jane Todd, in 1851 in Melksham. She died on 3 January 1908 in Islington, NSW.
  2. Henry Shadwell (or Ladd) was christened on 26 July 1807 in Melksham, Wiltshire. He married Louisa Mead, the daughter of Sampson Mead and Mary Baker, on 22 March 1825 in Melksham, Wiltshire. He died on 16 May 1883 in Acton, and was buried on 17 May 1883 in Acton St Mary.
  3. Louisa Mead was christened 17 July 1803 in West Lavington, Wiltshire. She married Henry Shadwell, the son of Thomas Shadwell (or Ladd) and Grace Hood, on 22 March 1825 in Melksham, Wiltshire. She died on 21 October 1887 in Acton, and was buried on 22 October 1887 in Acton St Mary.

Henry and Louisa had the following children:
Isaac Shadwell or Ladd was christened on 18 March 1826 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Mary Matilda Shadwell or Ladd was christened on 27 July 1828 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Mary Ann Shadwell was christened on 11 April 1830 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Mary Shadwell was christened on 16 September 1832 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Harriet Shadwell was christened on 16 March 1834 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Lydia Shadwell was christened on 25 September 1836 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Elizabeth Ladd was christened on 26 June 1839 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Rebecca Ladd was christened on 24 April 1842 in Melksham, Wiltshire.

In 1841, I believe I have found the Shadwells (or Ladds actually) living in The Stocks, Melksham. They are enumerated as Henery [sic] (39) and Lucey [sic] (38) Ladd and Ellen (8), Harriet (7), Elizabeth (4), and Lydia (2).

In 1851, Henry and Louisa Shadwell are enumerated living in Melksham with none of their children.
  4. Thomas Shadwell (or Ladd) married Grace Hood on 2 July 1785 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
  5. Grace Hood married Thomas Shadwell or Ladd on 2 July 1785 in Melksham, Wiltshire.

Thomas and Grace had the following children:
Mary Shadwell was christened on 26 December 1785 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Sarah Shadwell was christened on 30 July 1793 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Catherine Lad was christened on 26 July 1807 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
William Lad was christened on 26 July 1807 in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Henry Lad was christened on 26 July 1807 in Melksham, Wiltshire.

  6. Sampson Mead was born about 1778 in Wiltshire. He married Mary Baker in 1795 in West Lavington, Wiltshire. He married Elizabeth Merritt in 1800 in West Lavington, Wiltshire.
  7. Mary Baker married Sampson Mead in 1795 in West Lavington, Wiltshire.

Sampson and Mary had the following children:
Louisa Mead was christened 17 July 1803 in West Lavington, Wiltshire.
Harriett Mead was christened 6 April 1806 in West Lavington, Wiltshire.
Eleanor Mead was christened 17 June 1810 in West Lavington, Wiltshire.

I have no idea why this family is often recorded as "Shadwell or Ladd"... so if any one out there can shed some light on this, I would be grateful!

This is a post for the April A-Z Challenge. This Challenge will cover each letter of the alphabet, one per day (except Sundays) for the month of April. I didn't register my blog with the organisers, but I'm going to follow along anyway. You can too! See www.a-zchallenge.com for more information.
