Trove Tuesday: SS Cameronia – “the Queen Mary of the migrant fleet”

Another Tuesday, another Trove Tuesday post! Thanks to all those GeneaBloggers who joined in last week! I have put a list of all the Trove Tuesday blogs on a page on my blog site, so please let me know if I have missed any. It gets updated each Tuesday evening (AEST).

My paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Margaret Sergeant, arrived in Sydney in December 1949 from Glasgow aboard the SS Cameronia with her parents and sisters. She was 14 years old. Her father Robert, was a fitter, who had returned from the war, eager to find a better life for his family.

The ship departed Glasgow on 1 November 1949, on her maiden voyage as a migrant ship. The SS Cameronia had just had an extensive £1,000,000 refit – the cost of which was shared equally between the Australian and British governments.

I am only sharing a tiny snippet of the articles available on Trove relating to the SS Cameronia, more are in a public list called Cameronia (Migrant Ship), which is by no means exhaustive. For more information on using lists on Trove see their information page on Lists.
